Old Dogs

I loved the above picture and series of photos that it is a part of too much not to share. Elvis was not  puppy when we got him and over the past year that he has been a part of our lives, his ears have turned a little whiter and his naps have grown a little longer. I know he is an old dog and there is something so sweet and beautiful about him and all animals as they get older.

Fall

It is finally my favorite season of the year. The weather is cooler, the leaves are turning, the days are getting shorter and that magical golden light is gracing the beginning and end of each day. Here are our staples of autumn at casa Landrum-Long:

We have been using the above French press lately for our habitual morning brew because it keeps everything so piping hot for quite a while. As you all know, I am an avid fan of coffee and I am a bit of a snob. It is true that the French press method really makes the most flavorful cup so we have made the switch and stored the drip coffee maker.

I am currently making my way through this might tome and really enjoying it. Spending an afternoon with a good book is an essential fall activity and this one does not disappoint. Franzen hit me over the head with his Midwest-gothic aesthetic in The Corrections but Freedom is an excellent marriage of character development and discussion about the pitfalls of American “liberalism.”

The Barbour Bedale. The best jacket ever-made and Corey and I are sure to have this one for years and years to come. I am aware that my personal style has become increasingly “Town & Country.” I blame it on Scotland…

Pendleton Wool Blankets. I would bathe my house in these and plan on showering these on my sister when they build their abode in Maine.

To me, Fall is Elvis’ season. We got him almost a year ago and I think of him as the perfect animal for autumn. He clearly loves it as much as we do because his walks have gotten longer, there is a pep in his step and he was made to snuggle. Nothing makes me happier than this sweet dog.

Right Now: Elvis edition

Elvis’ book put him to sleep. Nonfiction has that effect on him.

Meet Elvis

"The King"

In his element

I thought it appropriate that the first post of this blog be about Elvis, the King of dogs. We adopted him in October from the Atlanta Beagle Rescue which is an awesome organization. Elvis is a 7 year-old beagle/basset mix and is true to form in the sense that food is his first passion, sleep a close second and then a deep and unwavering love of cuddling. This dog has successfully won my heart (not too hard, I will admit) and managed to snag Corey as well. Currently, he is readjusting his preferred sleeping position on the couch and will rouse in a bit to take a walk and I guarantee that he will resume his current position quickly. He rules this house, getting us up at the break of dawn everyday just because he can. And while we rise against our wills and stumble around the kitchen to make coffee and get the day started, after Elvis is fed and has sniffed out the block, he stretches across our bed and falls fast asleep. A dog’s life, indeed.
