Looking at: Paul Thek

This weekend was wonderful! I headed to NYC and saw people I adore, ate good food, bought some new specs, drank entirely too much and saw some amazing art – specifically the Paul Thek exhibit at The Whitney. I loved the painting of the Earth from a distance and the third picture was the last painting in the entire retrospective. Apparently, Thek drew a huge amount of inspiration from Christianity and was very much drawn to seminary as an alternative to his art. It was a beautiful exhibit…strange, compelling and extremely diverse in form.

Weekend Redux

Dinner with the beautiful Mattie.

Saw Corey’s band play.

Breakfast at Java Jive.

Beers at The Porter.

We had to say goodbye to Jean-Philippe. As they say in France, Bon Voyage!

Weekend redux.

On Friday night, I grabbed a beer with my good friend Aria at Bookhouse. We had a much-needed catch-up and I heard all about her epic hiking trip through North Georgia into Tennessee. She survived almost two weeks of camping and hike over 100 miles. Aspiration and inspiration for me! After a long sleep (5am was not my alarm), I caught up with Ruby and Jean-Philippe for a birthday brunch to celebrate our French visitor. We headed over to Sun In My Belly for a reliably delicious meal. Afterwards, we walked in the staggering heat to Criminal Records to see Gun Outfit, some friends of ours touring from Olympia, WA. The band is a real ripper and while the show was not heavily attended, it certainly should have been. We celebrated Jean-Philippe’s birthday with the band, some vegetarian food, and cupcakes. We even attempted to sing to him in French with mixed results to say the least. Sunday was laid back and quiet but we caught the World Cup game and cheered Spain on. Paella prevails!

Road Trip

We had Monday off which was amazing and we enjoyed every bit of it with a trip to see the Georgia Guidestones. Jean-Philippe found these for us and they are just about the strangest thing I have yet to see in Georgia. Basically, this unidentified donor wanted to erect America’s version of Stonehenge with inscriptions guiding people towards sustenance and conservation. So he scoured the country and of course he chose Elberton, GA – the granite capital of the US. On the way we stopped at a random rural gas station to get some treats and on the way home, we enjoyed a dip in Lake Hartwell. Enjoy the pics:

Slumming it in the US of A.

Corey and Rachel - cutest siblings.

Cheerwine, an elusive treat.

Ruby!

And finally, the Georgia Guidestones.

Weekend redux.

Many beers at Manuel's.

My weekend consisted of far too much of the above and a whole lot of World Cup. Oh, the poor USA. As the saying goes, what goes up, must come down. And Mexico? I really think you might have a serious chance next time. Until 2014, I am going to have to choose a new favorite team now that North America has been completely eliminated. Suggestions?

Weekend redux.

It has been a good couple of days around here. The weekend kicked off with some post-work drinks with ladies from work. We went to a local Mexican restaurant and had some margaritas and caught the last half of the England vs. Algeria game. We then kept happy hour going at my apartment and Elvis was thrilled to have so many beautiful ladies around.

After seeing Corey and Ruby off, Mattie (of The Grimoire Reader) joined me for some Hendrick’s & tonics (my favorite gin). After grabbing another friend of ours, we headed to see Corey’s band play. It was a great show and always wonderful to hang out with Mattie.

Ruby – who I should mention is our wonderful neighbor and dear friend – and I began Saturday at Java Jive, a reliable stronghold in the Atlanta brunch scene that is conveniently right across the street. We then headed off to Manuel’s to catch the Cameroon vs. Denmark game. I was rooting for Cameroon and they played an awesome game but just couldn’t take Denmark down in the end. It was a super quick, fun watch and even better with a beer and friends. Unfortunately, this was the last time we will see our good buddy Brad for a little while as he is moving to NYC. Brooklyn, watch out! Brad is really into beer and has let me try his homebrews which are outstanding. We wish him the best but will miss him around here!

Corey and I dozed for a bit and then headed to see Holy Rollers. It was a pretty out-there coming-of-age story but entertaining nonetheless. We fell asleep rather early (9pm – we’re old people) and woke up this morning to a wiggly dog ready to go out and eat his breakfast. Corey just completed making us some incredibly good tofu tacos featuring his patented chipotle aioli. We are settling in for the Brazil vs. the Ivory Coast. Ole!

A lot of friends, a lot of food and a lot of World Cup. Not a bad weekend in the least!
