Break Away

So – it is here. It comes every year at just about the same time. I am insanely busy and insanely pulled in an insane amount of directions. So, I am going to say goodbye to WordPress for now and move my musings and posts on over to Tumblr. It’s easier, quicker, and way less maintenance. Come by my Tumblr and see what I am finding inspiring and beautiful.

Freewheelin’

I love this picture for so many reasons: my icon Bob Dylan, the romance, the coziness, the bedheads, and the young love.

Looking at: Paul Thek

This weekend was wonderful! I headed to NYC and saw people I adore, ate good food, bought some new specs, drank entirely too much and saw some amazing art – specifically the Paul Thek exhibit at The Whitney. I loved the painting of the Earth from a distance and the third picture was the last painting in the entire retrospective. Apparently, Thek drew a huge amount of inspiration from Christianity and was very much drawn to seminary as an alternative to his art. It was a beautiful exhibit…strange, compelling and extremely diverse in form.

Listening to: NOLA

This fall is proving to be CRAZY! But all good things…Weekend before last, Corey and I went to New Orleans for the first time (shame on me – growing up in the South and never getting there before now) to see one of my oldest and dearest friends tie the knot. She and her man did it up traditional New Orleans style and we had a blast. They out-partied us by a million but I don’t think they out-ate us (no one ever does). So this past weekend, we listened to a TON of New Orleans music. I found this awesome video of the Rebirth Brass Band doing “Do Whatcha Wanna” at Mardi Gras. To me, it sums up the beauty and phenomenal spirit of the city.

Mad Men

Last night’s season finale was soooo good. I cannot stop thinking about it. And the possibilities for next season!!

- The scene where Peggy and Joan bro-down was utterly classic.

- Will Don tell Meagan about his past???

- How good is Fay Miller with the one-liners? And not to mention the predictions about human behavior!

- Why is Betty SO horrible? That cringe-worthy scene with Carla was just terrible.

- JOAN. JOAN IS HAVING THE BABY!

I can’t think of a better show on television and for me, this series is right up there with The Wire for best series of all time. I am eagerly awaiting season 5.

Old Dogs

I loved the above picture and series of photos that it is a part of too much not to share. Elvis was not  puppy when we got him and over the past year that he has been a part of our lives, his ears have turned a little whiter and his naps have grown a little longer. I know he is an old dog and there is something so sweet and beautiful about him and all animals as they get older.

Fall

It is finally my favorite season of the year. The weather is cooler, the leaves are turning, the days are getting shorter and that magical golden light is gracing the beginning and end of each day. Here are our staples of autumn at casa Landrum-Long:

We have been using the above French press lately for our habitual morning brew because it keeps everything so piping hot for quite a while. As you all know, I am an avid fan of coffee and I am a bit of a snob. It is true that the French press method really makes the most flavorful cup so we have made the switch and stored the drip coffee maker.

I am currently making my way through this might tome and really enjoying it. Spending an afternoon with a good book is an essential fall activity and this one does not disappoint. Franzen hit me over the head with his Midwest-gothic aesthetic in The Corrections but Freedom is an excellent marriage of character development and discussion about the pitfalls of American “liberalism.”

The Barbour Bedale. The best jacket ever-made and Corey and I are sure to have this one for years and years to come. I am aware that my personal style has become increasingly “Town & Country.” I blame it on Scotland…

Pendleton Wool Blankets. I would bathe my house in these and plan on showering these on my sister when they build their abode in Maine.

To me, Fall is Elvis’ season. We got him almost a year ago and I think of him as the perfect animal for autumn. He clearly loves it as much as we do because his walks have gotten longer, there is a pep in his step and he was made to snuggle. Nothing makes me happier than this sweet dog.

Agro.

This article appears today in the NY Times. I know this is not a popular sentiment, but where…are…the…helmets?!! I am so sick of seeing gorgeous people riding bikes with utter abandon. I have a soap box to stand on and I might stack a couple on top of one another today. Please, ladies who ride beautiful bikes with beautiful long locks in beautiful clothes and utterly gorgeous footwear, put on a helmet! It is as smart as the well-tailored pants you are wearing.

Home Again

Scotland was perfect. So beautiful and such amazing people, hearts warmed by whisky and the most breathtaking country there is. I loved every second of my two weeks there and just wish that it could have lasted forever. We will certainly go back one day. More to come…

Right Now: Edinburgh Edition

Our vacation is almost over and Corey and I are spending the night in Edinburgh. Oh yeah, so is the Pope and the Queen.
